A Brief History
South Beach in San Francisco has a rich and varied history. Originally known as Steamboat Point, it was a bustling area filled with boatyards, warehouses, and fishing activities. The neighborhood was also the headquarters of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company, which played a crucial role in establishing the first trans-Pacific service between the US and Asia. This service was instrumental in the development of the city, facilitating significant East-West trade and immigration.
In the 1850s, South Beach was home to a notable Chinese fishing village and various dockworkers’ waterfront restaurants. The area also has a history of industrial activity, with several historic brick warehouses and industrial buildings that survived the 1906 earthquake.
